The maddening thing about this tornado is that I had been carrying a small, cheap camera with me but had taken it out of the car just the day before. I made a vow to never be without a camera ever again.

I remember standing in the street watching the funnel with a cute waitress from the cafe across the street. I still can see the worried look on her face and small bits of paper and grass that was raining down and landing in her hair.

I also remember seeing a couple of guys I knew walking down the alley behind where I was; I hollered, pointed behind them at the tornado and they did what I call a "cartoon double-take" -they hadn't known it was behind them!

There was a young man that came by the store several days prior to the storm; he had just purchased a brand new pickup and wanted to show it to me.

If you look closely - and I'll have to get the exact time on the video - you can see his truck being flung hundreds of feet up in the air. Afterward his truck looked like it had been put in a masher and molded into one big rectangle.

The poor guy- I dunno what the deal exactly was, but after the insurance company settled up, he still owed money on the vehicle.

The storm destroyed several businesses, destroyed or damaged 200 homes and injured seven people.

I remember where I was that afternoon. Dad had just had hernia surgery and we were at the hospital waiting for him to be discharged. They called a code black over the PA system at the hospital. I knew what that meant and ran to the window to look out. That tornado was centered right in the middle of the window coming our direction. I panicked and started trying to get Mother and Dad out in the hallway. That's what all the nurses were doing with the rest of the patients. Dad insisted on getting out of the wheelchair and going to the window to see for himself. I finally got the two of them out in the hallway away from the glass windows and started helping the nurses with other patients. I looked up and the two of them had gone back into that damn room to watch the tornado again. I just gave up and finally told them that I came into this world with the two of them in a hospital in Pampa and I guessed I could go out of this world the same way. Thank goodness the tornado didn't make it all the way to the hospital. There was a lot of damage around town though. It wasn't an event I want to repeat!
