Berry Interesting!

Did you know pineapples belong to the berry family? The pineapple is a multiple fruit made up of coalesced berries. The name comes from its pine cone-like appearance.

Yup, they call that an aggregate fruit in botany circles. One of my favorite labs to teach is the one on fruiting structures. I go grocery shopping and bring in all kinds of fruit, nuts, seeds and we cut them open, identify different structures and arrangements of parts then we eat them! I always try to get some exotic thing that the kids have never eaten.

I would love to try some of the exotic fruits, nuts, and seeds. I did have a co-worker who was Vietnamese and she would bring stuff to work and share with me. She loved pineapple and papaya. My mouth has been sore many a time from eating too much of those goodies. I just have no sense of adventure.

to go berry picking then, in the tropics takes on a whole new perspective. Upon tasting a pina de Indies for the first time, President George Washington declared immediately it to be his favorite fruit. He meant to say berry.

I confess that I looked all that info up- not realizing that a pineapple has such a history

I haven't eaten a pineapple in years; I'm allergic to them, make my throat itch and swell up.
